Tales from the closure...

Wow! Things have been humming around here! The ramp behind the Foster House is being completely rebuilt and various other projects are coming to fruition as we approach the "halfway" mark of the closure. We miss hearing the footsteps and laughter of our visitors, but we relish the opportunity to engage in projects that would otherwise prove obtrusive and distracting to patrons.

When the ramp is finished, I will post pictures of the process and the final product. I think y'all will be impressed! And soon we'll be preparing to begin (re)construction on the Howard Cabin! Details will be forthcoming on that project as well.

So what "closure projects" are YOU currently undertaking?

Our first photos from "The Village Through YOUR Eyes..."

Yay! We've got some great photos from dedicated Village visitors! These are local fans, Jeff and Jordana. Thanks for sending them in, Jeanette!

Reminder...you can send us your photos any time and we'll be happy to post them on our blog! We want to see the Village through YOUR eyes!!!

Happy birthday, dear Lincoln...

Abraham Lincoln is drawing a lot of attention this year, and rightfully so. In February, he will turn 200 (yet he doesn't look a day over 190...)! Must be the beard...

Anyhoo...there are a number of web sites and historical sites that are marking this event in exciting and dynamic ways. We wanted to highlight a few for you:

Don't forget...Barack Obama will be sworn in to the United States presidency on January 20, 2009, using the same Bible Lincoln used. What an amazing historical connection!

Whatcha Got Cookin'? Why lots of fun, of course!!!!

Here we are...knee deep in today's event...and here I am at my computer. Why, you ask? Because today has been so darned much fun that I had to steal away for a few moments to blog about it. These pictures were too great to wait!

A HUGE THANK YOU goes out to the Prairie Dog chapter of the Lone Star Dutch Oven Society for being our special guests today. They are both entertaining AND educating...and the smells wafting throughout the Village are truly indescribable (in a good way :) ).

Anyhoo...here are the photos (please click on the slideshow to control the speed or to view them larger):

More food research--sweet potatoes and the Lone Star State...

I've been having a lot of fun researching 19th century food and cooking for our upcoming event. Like all research projects, however, one can only cram so much information into so little space (i.e. special signs, handouts, etc). Fortunately we have a blog! Yay! Another outlet for exciting 19th century food information! Don't act like you're not interested... :) :) :)

Sweet potatoes...(a.k.a. "I yam what I yam"--or not since sweet potatoes are actually in a different plant family than yams...but I digress)

Here are some great "morsels" from The Handbook of Texas Online:

"The sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas) belongs to the Convolvulaceae, or morning glory family. It is a native of tropical America and is unrelated to the true yam, which is a climbing plant of the genus Dioscorea and an Old World native. The sweet potato was first cultivated in Texas by the Spanish and was later grown by Anglo-American settlers. Several varieties of sweet potatoes have been grown in Texas, including the Puerto Rico, Goldrush, Redgold, Allgold, Centennial, Jewel, and Red Velvet. Sweet potatoes were grown in Texas in the late 1800s primarily for home consumption. The 1870 census shows 68 of 139 counties reporting production of over 10,000 bushels and a total state production of 2,188,041 bushels. Only eighteen counties reported no sweet potato production in 1870. Sweet potatoes were not grown commercially in Texas until the early 1900s."

Sweet potatoes are not only historic...they're tasty and healthy! Try this recipe at home for spicy sweet potato fries...

No reservations required. Cost is regular Village admission plus a $2 fee to make your own “foodie” craft.

Also...the deadline for submission of your photos is fast approaching! Get those Village photos in!
